Speciation of trace elements is the occurrence of an element in separate identifiable forms, i. Chemical speciation of trace elements is still in its infancy. Yet it is already clear that for us to understand the true interaction of trace elements with the biosphere it is absolutely necessary to know in which chemical form they are present. Simple ‘total-element determinations’ cannot help us any further, only ‘speciation’ will allow us to progress.
This Thematic Network will consider species of the elements aluminium, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, platinum, selenium, tin, zinc.
It makes me think about what kind of new world we want this to be. reform the education system so that it’s fit for the 21st century and can we.
Just last year, Hai Cheng and others in Nature published the best-dated and most highly resolved record of glacial cold and dry to interglacial warm and wet climate oscillations from the last , years based on Chinese stalagmites. The climate-centred focus of Henderson is still relevant, and remains the most important facet of speleothem science, one which has still much to tell us about past and future climate states.
Yet, as we approach the end of the second decade of the twenty-first century, the comparison to ice cores seems less relevant, as the science of speleothems comes into its own and the breadth of cave science comes into focus. New Zealand is perhaps the perfect location in the world to explore these diverse research paths, and to answer questions of genuine societal relevance. Our remnant of Gondwana is practically riddled with caves — a world-renowned caving destination where the bold explore new subterranean worlds, places where literally no human has set foot.
We pick up this story at the beginning of New Zealand cave science. Technology inherited and developed from war-time nuclear scientists is starting to come into the hands of chemists and earth scientists in research institutions, and New Zealand is an early forerunner in the application of this technology. One young pioneer in this field is Chris Hendy.
Recently graduated from Victoria University of Wellington, he carries out a series of highly novel isotope measurements on cave carbonates, pens a seminal paper in the field Hendy, , and then, from the perspective of many speleothem scientists, disappears from view though not underground! While Hendy pursued other interests, in particular the burgeoning field of Antarctic science, others picked up his mantle and proceeded to apply his ideas to reconstruct past climate variations from speleothems.

At a. This visit will be the most distant flyby ever , breaking the record New Horizons itself set in July , when the probe cruised past Pluto. But New Horizons will shatter that mark yet again in the coming years, if things work out the way mission team members hope. The team will propose sending New Horizons “to explore even deeper in the Kuiper Belt, to use our telescopes onboard to study objects in ways you can’t from the Earth,” New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, said during a webcast mission update yesterday Dec.
The Kuiper Belt is the ring of icy bodies beyond Neptune; the belt includes Pluto, Ultima Thule and milions of other bodies. New Horizons, which launched in January , has enough juice left in its nuclear battery a radioisotope thermoelectric generator , or RTG to keep the power on through the mid to late s, he said.

She has identified some recurrent levers that play a core role in success and failure, strengths and pitfalls. These boil down to three major factors: Determinism, Ambition, and Resistance to Change. Over time, I have built a picture of what drives people towards their dreams and goals, and what pulls them away.

The authors of a new book suggest that reading novels could sharpen their insights, while four academics consider how the field might need to change. Although both authors value the insights of economics, particularly at the micro level, they believe something has gone radically wrong with the discipline in its insistence on its scientific status and its reluctance to take into account other perspectives. They came to this conclusion from opposite directions.
Yet the policy led to people dying in protest riots, and increased the risk of widespread malnutrition. From this point of view, a given amount of health-impairing pollution should be done in the country with the lowest cost, which will be the country with the lowest wages. Meanwhile, Morson — who is Lawrence B. Dumas professor of the arts and humanities at Northwestern, as well as professor of Slavic languages and literatures there — spent a year in the mids at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.
Could anyone with the slightest familiarity with people — or with the least introspective ability — imagine that they never act self-destructively or against what they regard as their best interests? Psychiatrists and novelists would be out of business if that were so. So what can a book devoted to bridging the gap hope to achieve? It would be great if literature got cited in economics journals, but, in the meantime, the humanistic or qualitative social sciences would be a nice first step.
This is a relatively familiar criticism of academic economics, but why might reading novels be the best antidote?

New horizons for culture, creativity and cities. Pratt, A.C. (). New horizons Abstract. At the turn of the 21st Century globalisation was the watchword, and global cities were a key point of reference. Date Deposited:
Monday is Wednesday is Saturday. But when my friend Brian texts me for the latest gossip, I tell him that yesterday, just before midnight, I met a ghost on my island who gave me a bidet. That sort of unlikely exchange happens all the time in Animal Crossing: New Horizons , a cheerful and funny video game for the Nintendo Switch that has become a social-media sensation in the era of social distancing.
There is no kidnapped princess or planet on the brink of war, but you get to go outside, which is even better. Two weeks into quarantine and I’ve come to consider this a legitimately meaningful social interaction pic. With its low-stakes emphasis on making friends and decorating your house, Animal Crossing plays less like a traditional game and more like a lifestyle simulator.
Nothing is all that urgent in Animal Crossing, where the goals are breezy and can be put off indefinitely. That sort of sustained commitment is why I had resisted previous installments in the Animal Crossing franchise: As I grew out of my teenage years, I preferred shorter games that would more easily slot into my busy life. I downloaded Animal Crossing: New Horizons on a recent Friday night and named my island Akbar, in honor of the neighborhood bar my friends and I frequented before the quarantine.
Over the next few days, the game became a balm. Whenever the crushing tonnage of real-world news was too much, I would check into Akbar, where I could simply collect shells on the beach, watch a meteor shower or encourage a teal squirrel named Nibbles to pursue her dreams of pop superstardom. Right now, it helps to look for the little pleasures wherever you can find them, and Animal Crossing is packed full, each precious incident serving as a bite-sized mental-health break.
Slowly, the island became a digital substitution for my real life. The wall is striped yellow, the carpet is polka-dot, and most of the furniture is coated in the color of Pepto-Bismol.
