Having worked for the Ferdinand Strauss toy company as a young man, Louis Marx gained enough experience to start his own toy company in The secret to the Marx’s success was in offering a variety of toys similar in make-up to successful toys produced by other companies. Marx, however, varied the toy enough to avoid charges of piracy and undersold the competition. Yearly alterations to his toys kept them in production for decades and thus held down per unit costs.

The Marx company aimed some of its most popular play sets at boys.

Louis Marx, world traveler and inventor struggles to build his company from renting toy factories to building them internationally with his brother Dave at the height of the ‘s as they seek the “red hot hit” –that toy which is so popular it sells in millionaire-making numbers climaxing with their greatest hits, the Marx Playset.

It’s exciting text and rare images as Louis Marx, merry son of a poor immigrant tailor, claws his way to the top of a crowded toy world by inventing toy after toy and hiring — through intuition and luck — exactly the right men at precisely the right time to deliver what every toy firm needs, the “red hot hit. It is profusely illustrated and features the newly discovered, never before published scrapbooks of Louis Marx himself. I didn’t get additional Marx items as a child. It was only when I reached adulthood that the collection started to grow. Because I had them as a child, big locomotives and the 8-wheel plastic rolling stock with type “G” trucks look “right” to me and my initial efforts concentrated on collecting more of these items. Recently, I have fallen hard for the 6″ tin lithographed four-wheel rolling stock and the small sheet metal locomotives. These pieces have a definite charm the larger pieces lack and look better circling my small layout than the bigger plastic pieces do.

WELL– It’s been too long since we started to restore the toys in the pictures. We have been busy building a new shop for repairing and restoring toys and that is now complete!! The Louis Marx Company was the largest toy manufacturer in the s — as most all know!! This was a line in a stage play that I have kept in memory. We received an e-mail from Morphy Auctions concerning an auction in Lebanon, Indiana.

This auction will be held to desolve the Carter Toy Museum that was opened in Sadly the owner passed away and we offer our sympathy to the family. We have posted three pictures of the former Marx Museum Inc. The fact is our group of people are becoming fewer. Actually, you most likely will not get there attention because their thumbs are busy texting!!!!!!!! We have friends that are attempting to sell their collection on the internet. Is this because today, a toy is plastic that is intended to be tossed in the waste can??

Well — we will be here to do our very best to keep this fraternity of toy collectors active!!!!

Clockwork toy in the form of a First World War tank, made from pressed tin-plated mild steel, printed with a design representing riveted steel plates, coloured yellow, blue and black. The toy moves on two wheels on either side of the base, and a third in the centre back of the base. The clockwork mechanism and the back wheel are connected by a spring and metal bars to a concealed figure representing a soldier aiming a rifle. As the rear wheel swivels in a semi-circular arc, the cover over the sniper lifts, he comes out then drops back inside, and the cover falls.

At the same time a sound representing gunfire is heard. The sniper is printed to represent a US Army sergeant, in a red tunic with a brown helmet. On top of the tank is a swivelling turret with two ‘guns’, and mounted on either side of the tank is a sponson containing a gun the left one is missing. Louis Marx and Company was an American toy manufacturer in business from to Its products were often imprinted with the slogan, “One of the many Marx toys, have you all of them? As the X sometimes goes unseen, Marx toys were, and are still today, often misidentified as “Mar” toys. Reputedly, because of this name confusion, the Italian diecast toy company Martoys , after two years of production, changed its name to Bburago in Although the Marx name is now largely forgotten except by toy collectors, several of the products that the company developed remain strong icons in popular culture, including Rock’em Sock’em Robots , introduced in , and its best-selling sporty Big Wheel tricycle, one of the most popular toys of the s.

Marx’s toys included tinplate buildings, tin toys , toy soldiers , playsets, toy dinosaurs, mechanical toys, toy guns , action figures , dolls , dollhouses , toy cars and trucks, and HO scale and O scale trains. Marx also made several models of typewriters for children.

In the case of the Marx Action Figures, the Torso mold cavity needed a large ejector pin. On most of these molds the head of the pin was inscribed with a roman numeral year date and the name of the Marx company around the date. The ejector pin would be placed in the mold before casting and therefore whatever was on the face of that ejector pin head would be cast into the part itself. The above information is based on my study of molds in general. I have not had the opportunity to see an actual Marx mold in operation so I may be ‘mistaken’ on a few details.

The thing to remember is that this ‘Stamp Date’ is not the year the part was cast. Not every country, figure or combination used the dated ejector pin all the time. I will attempt to show you the ejector pin marking and tell you what figure it was used on.
